The Perigord is renowned for it's caves and it's medieval castles and towns. Two caves sites in particular are worth mentioning.
Grotte de Villars: Guided tours, sound and light show, cafe, shop, car-park, picnic area and playground. Discovered in 1953, this is the largest underground network in the Perigord, with more than 13 kilometres explored to this day. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers, connected to each other by galleries.
Prehistoric painings were discovered in 1958, which were made 17,000 years ago, and you will see these on the tour. Grotte de Villars is approximately 60 minutes from The Cherry Trees, and details are in the information folder, and at http://www.grotte-villars.com/
Lascaux caves: Lascaux may be the most beautiful Paleolithic painted cave in the world. It contains more than 1500 pictures of animals, all of them are 17,000 years old. Find out more at http://www.mazzaroth.com/ChapterOne/LascauxCave.htm . Lascaux is approximately 90 minutes from The Cherry Trees, not far from the town of Perigueux, and details are in the information folder.
